Upstart Alpha is a university-based program launched in 2019 designed to provide entrepreneurs with the resources and connections to grow an idea into a business. You will learn how to test you idea, find your best customers, meet investors, and more!
Upstart Alpha’s accelerator is delivered in two phases, each requiring a separate, short application. This is designed to strengthen each cohort through mutual accountability, deepen interactions, and ensure entrepreneurs are roughly at the same stage of exploration and execution. Entrepreneurs who complete Phase 2 will also receive a small stipend.

The Ideal Applicant
You must be based in Alaska. We believe in building strong local entrepreneur ecosystems.
You must be early stage. Pre-revenue? Great. Just an idea? No problem.
We love University of Alaska students! But it’s not a requirement, and we welcome all.
We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds; supporting women entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs of color is important to this program and our state's economic future.
Program Requirements
Phase 1 of this program is delivered virtually; you must have access to and be proficient with Zoom and have access to a stable internet connection.
Phase 2 of this program is delivered in a hybrid format (virtual participation for folks outside of Anchorage). If you live in Anchorage, we ask that you attend all sessions in person. This is important because it builds strong cohort dynamics and increases the value you’ll receive. If you live outside of Anchorage, we will provide a virtual option for you.
Your presence is important and mandatory. In order to advance through both Phases, entrepreneurs are expected to be present and engaged, to learn by doing, and to support others in the cohort by giving feedback and asking critical questions.
TIMELINE for Cohort 5 (Fall 2023)
Phase 1 is October 5th & 6th from 11-1 pm.
Phase 2 is October 13th - December 15th on Fridays from 11-1 p.m.

Phase 1 is October 3rd & 4th from 11-1 pm.
Phase 2 is October 11th - December 13th on Fridays from 11-1 p.m.

We understand, the life of an entrepreneur is busy! That is why we created the Upstart Alpha Workbook. It provides theory, exercises, and worksheets as a companion to our accelerator but can be used as a stand-alone guide for entrepreneurs who aren't able to attend sessions.
